Entertain Me

When our client approached us with an open-ended question about their space, “What would you recommend for this space?” we knew we had an exciting challenge ahead. They shared their passion for alfresco entertaining, envisioning a roofed terrace that complemented their plans for a backyard pizza oven. The design needed to provide year-round enjoyment without blocking winter sunlight into the home and comply with BAL19 bushfire safety regulations due to the property’s location. This challenge presented an exciting opportunity to create a versatile outdoor entertainment area that met both functional and regulatory requirements.

Meeting Requirements:

To meet these needs, we proposed a flat roof supported by two sturdy posts, extending back over the existing roof of the home. This design would provide the necessary coverage for the terrace while maintaining the low profile required to avoid shading the windows. To ensure the space remained bright and airy, we planned to install large skylights that would allow natural light to continue flooding into the home, even with the new roof extension.

Given the bushfire rating, it was imperative that all materials used were non-combustible. We opted for a steel construction for both durability and compliance with fire safety standards. The choice of steel also provided a sleek, modern aesthetic that complemented the existing architecture of the home.

Design & Construction:

Expanding on the idea of a covered entertainment area, we extended the roofing around the corner of the house to seamlessly connect with the covered accessway to the garage. This wraparound design not only provided additional sheltered space for a BBQ zone but also enhanced the flow and usability of the outdoor areas.

Water Management:

Water management was another critical aspect of the project. To ensure sustainability and efficiency, we designed a system to capture roof runoff and divert it across the garden to established rainwater tanks. This system not only supported the client’s gardening activities but also contributed to the overall eco-friendliness of the home.

The Result?

Throughout the project, we worked closely with the client to ensure that each phase, from design to installation, perfectly matched their vision and functional needs. We meticulously executed details such as skylights and stormwater management to create an outdoor entertaining area that met all requirements—enhancing functionality without sacrificing light or safety. The client was delighted with the transformation, which significantly improved their enjoyment of their home by combining practicality with a love for outdoor living.

Frequently Asked Questions About Decks & Pergolas

Yes, most decks and pergolas require council approval or a permit, especially if they are certain sizes or heights, or if they are attached to your house. We know that getting council approval can be overwhelming, so we’d be more than happy to assist you throughout the process.

The construction time can vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. Generally, a simple deck or pergola can be built within a week, but larger or more complex designs may take several weeks.

The best location depends on your property’s layout, sun exposure, and how you plan to use the space. Ideally, it should offer privacy, take advantage of views, and complement your home’s existing architecture.

Yes, pergolas can be either attached to your home or freestanding. An attached pergola often extends from the house and provides a seamless transition to outdoor living spaces, but requires careful integration with your home’s existing structure.

A deck is typically made of wood or composite materials and is raised off the ground, which can be advantageous on sloped landscapes. A patio is usually built at ground level and often constructed from concrete, pavers, or stone.

Maintenance varies by material. Wood decks and pergolas need to be cleaned and sealed every one to three years. Composite decks require less maintenance, usually just regular cleaning. Metal pergolas may need occasional painting or rust removal.
