Initial Consultation and Design

From the beginning, the client wanted a home that not only looked beautiful but was also practical and energy-efficient. Throughout our planning discussions, we focused on making the home environmentally friendly.

The design was a thoughtful layering of spaces:

  • At the top, a secluded parents’ retreat offered tranquillity and escape.
  • The heart of the home on the mid-level combined a spacious living area and main entry, designed around the client’s passion for cooking and entertaining.
  • Below, a dedicated space for teenagers and a fully equipped granny flat provided privacy and independence.
  • The ground level connected seamlessly to the lush back garden, cleverly incorporating practical areas for storage, a washing line, and a cellar.

An Energy Efficient Dream

To let in lots of natural light, we added tall, slanted ceilings with special windows at the top. We switched from using brick to using a highly insulative material called Hebel, which we finished with custom plasters to help keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. We chose double-glazed windows and used natural timber that was responsibly sourced, helping the house blend into its wooded hillside setting.

For heating and cooling, we designed the home to make the most of the sun’s warmth during the winter. We also adjusted the design to catch the breeze during summer and included a special staircase that helped pull cool air through the house, keeping it comfortable without needing air conditioning.
